Transmit App Reviews

Good, but room for improvement

I use this app to connect to my Drobo 5N while I am at work. So far I’ve really enjoyed using this app but I’ve run into a problem here or there. Most notably, I frequently have to force quit Finder after right clicking on a server item in finder. For whatever reason this often causes my laptop to freeze despite the fact that it is a brand new Macbook Pro. I am also disappointed that there is no way to set my SFTP server as a Time Machine Backup location, but I suppose thats more of a feature request than an actual issue, so I won’t subtract any stars for that. I would also like it if there was a way to have drives mount automatically upon login, again though, that’s just a feature request.

Fast Uploads and Downloads

I am getting consistently fast upload and download speeds with this app, even for files over 1GB. It took me a little getting accustomed to the user interface, but now that I have, i find it flexible and superior to my prior app in terms of UX. My other FTP clients do not match the speed, flexibility and stability of Transmit. Yes, I am very happy with this app. Glad I gave it a try, it is now my go-to app for FTP.

Slow, not for pros, not worth the money.

I hate to write this review, I wanted to like the app. But after using it now for a few months, it’s significantly slower than any other FTP client I’ve used. I used to think pigs-is-pigs when it comes to FTP clients, but Transmit is so much slower than other apps it’s really frustrating. There are some clunky design choices too that add to the frustration, such as no progress display when synchronizing. (see below) It has the seeds of a nicely made app, but the problems are foundational and unavoidable. And frankly, when you pay this much for an app that has countless free competitors, you expect it to be heads above the rest. I’ve talked with their support team, and this app just isn’t ready for prime time. Pros: -clean interface -responsive support -drag and drop to and from outside the app -two-click-sync (see cons below) Cons: -so very slow. side by side, other apps put it to shame -if you grab a folder to put on a server, it will load the files in that folder one at a time, regardless of your settings for simultaneous transfers. (Their support team says they are working on this, but that’s a beta level bug, not a “4.” FTP client. That’s just flat unacceptable. Their suggested workaround is to create the remote folder, then grab all the files inside and put those as a group. If you’re copying an entire site with subfolders and varying folder permissions, this just isn’t realistic. -adding insult to injury with the above point, you can’t rely on the app to copy the files. there are errors in almost every transfer. when you grab a few hundred files, almost every time 20 or so of those files will have errors, so you have to either manually go back and find them, or use their sync option (after you’ve tried the manual way), which presents the next problem -the sync feature is a nice idea, however it copies files one at a time. Again, amazing that an FTP client of this age hasn’t fixed these fundamentals. -cryptic progress indicators or none at all. you can view a progress bar for each file, or in some cases (but not all) you have a combined progress bar that gives you no useful information. I think the idea is that the darker grey progress shows overall, and light grey progress shows individual files. But the dark grey progress will fill to 100% and start over seemingly at random. and using the sync feature, you get one single progress bar that resets for every file as an annoying reminder that this app is loading one file at a time. Like I said, I really wanted to like this app, but it is a frustrating waste of money when Cyberduck, or even the ever-clunky FileZilla will give you better performance for free.

WISH I WOULD HAVE READ THE 2 STAR REVIEW BEFORE SPENDING MY $$

**PLEASE READ** IF YOU DON’T WANT TO READ THE DETAILS. SAVE YOUR MONEY, THIS APP IS A RIP OFF FOR THE POWER FTP/SSH USER. Otherwise read on for details. First of all I depend on FTP/SSH daily for the type of work I do and primarily I use Filezilla. I work mainly on my MAC so I was wondering about what FTP/SSH transfer program was “For MAC”.Looking at the initial reviews and knowing the price I assumed this would be the file transfer proggie of ALL file transfer progs! Sadly I was mistaken I began using the app and immediately noticed my files coming down, OR not coming down at the speeds they were previously. I assumed it was because I had not turned on simultaneous downloads. However when I set the transfers to anything, Transmit will still only transfer one file at a time. If you don’t think this is significant, this is the difference in transferring 562.5 MB file (from Server A to SSD Client device); FileZilla with 10 simultaneous Transfers 22.55 seconds, Transmit 1:55.15. This was only amplified with larger GB transfers. This is totally unacceptable I say for a App that is $30+ dollars. BOTTOM LINE… SAVE YOUR MONEY THERE ARE FREE ALTERNATIVES OUT THERE THAT ARE 50X BETTER AND… FREE

Seriously, 30 dollars for this?

The most unreliable FTP client I’ve ever used. Slow. Filezilla looks like a cheetah compared to this thing. UI looks nice, but what does it matter if the app doesnt work? This is third time I’ve lost data with a disk mounted because it failed to save, then decided that the file it failed to save should get uploaded, resulting in a zero kb file. Oh, gee, thanks. Is there no internal error checking? I get ‘credentials invalid’ all that time, but then magically on the 3rd try to connect to a server it will work. Never had this issue with any other client. Hasn’t been updated in forever, just like Coda. Don’t buy from Panic. They don’t update their software, and don’t provide solid tools. As a developer, my tools are the last thing I want to be fighting with. I spend more time trying to get Panic’s programs to behave (or going in and trying to recover data) than actually getting work done.

Slow concurrent downloads

I bouht this app today to try it out because filezilla is pretty bad looking. The UI on this app is great, but even after setting my concurrent downloads to 10 (like I have set in filezilla), the app still only downloaded files one at a time. I restarted the app thinking that maybe the settings didn’t take, and it then started downloading 3 at a time… Long story short, I killed the download and went back to filezilla and the download finished quickly. I need my files to download fast, and Transmit doesn’t seem to be able to do that.

Pretty, but not amazing

Client looks great, and no doubt I’ll make good use of features like iCloud bookmark syncing and the Transmit Drive. However, the very first transfer I attempted (via FTP) was to download a folder with a number of files inside it: despite having the number of files to transfer set at 5, this kicked off just 1 download (the first file in the folder) and queued the rest of the files to wait — not automatically downloading in parallel. I had to manually drag each file in the folder in order for them to start downloading in parallel. So not really the most streamlined experience compared to pretty much every other client I’ve ever used, and rather a shock given the price tag… UPDATE: and it’s only downhill from there — as others indicated, the Transmit Drive sounds like a good idea, but inevitably it just ends up in data loss (seems to be a caching issue where you can only update / write from one side of the disk, or you’re basically guaranteed to lose everything in the file). Maybe it has some must-have features for extremely niche users buried somewhere deep in Proxy configuration, or something, but with even the most basic functionality not up to par of freely available alternatives it’s a bit of a joke. Like others, I wanted to like it, but now can’t believe I spent this kind of money on such a poor tool.

Does not work with Yosemite

Unbearably slow to mount FTP or WebDAV and constantly freezes when trying to save, move or do anything with remote files. I’ve found that Finder is a much better replacement for transmit.

Good for WordPress

It’s good and does what it says. I have never really had problems with the application and mainly use it for reupdating my themes on WordPress and managing my website’s hosting.

The BEST FTP Program I have Ever Used!

I have been a long time interarchie user. but recently interarchie and other ftp programs I have tried have been buggy with secure transfers. This program seems to do a great job not losing the connection and resuming file transfers when needed. I am often uploading big files 16 gigs or bigger. After usying this program for more than a year, I can say without a doubt that this is the BEST FTP program I have ever used. I have been using FTP programs for close to 20 years now, and this is by far the best designed and best functioning FTP program you can find.

Excellent

Just bought and used for the first time. Very intuitive. Worked without hiccups.
